Thailand Reports Nine New Coronavirus Cases, No More Deaths. By Reuters, Wire Service Content April 29, 2020, at 1:03 a.m. Thailand Reports Nine New Coronavirus Cases, No More.
Thousands of Chinese workers and students are set to return here from their Lunar New Year trips home amid the rapid spread of coronavirus in China, sparking concerns in Korea.
An estimated 100,000 Chinese students, housekeepers, nursing home caretakers and restaurant workers are on their way back here. Politicians face mounting calls to block Chinese people from entering Korea, but the demands are unrealistic.
Some 71,067 Chinese students were studying in Korea as of April of last year, accounting for around 44 percent of all foreign students here.
Language institutes linked to universities here are canceling classes. The Korean Language Education Center at Seoul National University canceled all classes Tuesday and told students returning from China to quarantine themselves for a week. The Yonsei University Korean Language Institute and Korea University Korean Language Center announced the cancellations of classes until Wednesday, while Sungkyunkwan University Korean Language Center and Hanyang University will resume classes next week.
Hanyang University postponed the Thursday deadline for the submission of foreign student visas. An administrative staffer at Kyunghee University said, 'Most Chinese students return to Korea around mid-February to prepare for the new semester and we expect that period to mark the crucial moment.'
'We are looking into implementing special measures as parents are expected to visit their children who are graduating,' the staffer added.
Meanwhile, some 56,000 Korean students are studying at universities and graduate schools in China, and considerable chaos is expected as many may come home to avoid the coronavirus outbreak.
No official figures exist of the total number of Chinese housekeepers, nursing home caretakers and restaurant workers in Korea because many are here illegally, making it difficult to project how many will return from China. Some estimates put the number of nursing home caretakers alone at 180,000 to 200,000, with 70 to 80 percent being ethnic Koreans from China.
Many of them are believed to have gone home for the Lunar New Year. A staffer at the Korean Medical Association said, 'We need to come up with guidelines for Chinese workers who return to Korea.'
Panicked members of the public here are clamoring for limitations or even bans on the entry of Chinese people. A petition on the Cheong Wa Dae website to that effect drew more than 540,000 signatures on Tuesday, five days after it was first posted.
But while a country in principle has the right to deny entry to any foreigners, curbing the entry of Chinese citizens would put an intolerable burden on Korea-China relations.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has defended its stance on diversity and equality after West Indies great Michael Holding criticised England and Australia for not taking a knee in support of the 'Black Lives Matter' movement during their ongoing limited-overs series.
Mainstage 3 4 4 x 2. England wore 'Black Lives Matter' logos on their shirts during their test series against West Indies and took the knee to protest against racism, but opted not to continue the practice in subsequent series against Pakistan and Australia.
'Now that the West Indies team has gone home, that doesn't mean that you still shouldn't be respecting the message and what it stands for,' Holding told Sky Sports.
'Yes, (racism) is more acute in the United States than in most other places but people around the entire world took on the mantle of spreading the word and getting this message out that it is time for equality and time for equal justice.

'It was no longer just a black versus white thing.. so for Pakistan and England not to then take that signal.. neither team did it and the ECB came out with a pretty lame statement, as far as I am concerned.'
Before the current series began, Australia skipper Aaron Finch said his team would not take the knee because 'education is more important than the protest.'

The ECB issued a statement in response to former fast bowler Holding's comments.

'Our response to the Black Lives Matter debate has been to view the issue alongside the whole inclusion and diversity space, to ensure that long-term and sustainable change happens for all communities who are not treated equally,' it read.
'Our refreshed inclusion and diversity strategy, published at the start of the West Indies series, commits to several comprehensive initiatives that focus on eliminating discrimination from all areas of cricket.
'England's men's and women's players all remain committed to using their reach and influence to keep promoting inclusion and diversity in perpetuity, for the betterment of cricket and sport. We understand the importance of symbolism, and its power to keep an issue high on the agenda. Our goal is to ensure we deliver both reach and change.'
Holding took issue with Finch's comments, saying that raising awareness and education were both important tools in the fight for equality.

'Well, I don't know any sport where anyone is barred from playing because of anything at all. So that's a pretty lame statement.'

Former West Indies skipper Daren Sammy has also spoken out in favour of equality, urging cricket's governing bodies to treat racism more seriously and pay it the same attention they give to upholding the integrity of the game.
